Introduction to MERKIS Training Concept
What is MERKIS?
- MERKIS is an effective communication, business-process-management and decision-making game that teaches teamwork, communication skills, and to give participants an enterprise-wide view on how a company actually functions.
- MERKIS is a real time business simulation, during which the participants, divided into teams, manage simulated companies and compete against one another in an authentic realistic business environment.
- MERKIS can be used as a safe training and testing site in which the participants can test and enhance their own business ideas and the company’s development strategies prior to practical real life implementations in actual workplace environments.
MERKIS – The process and elements of the game
- Company
- The game MERKIS takes place in the training room, where the participants manage the simulated company through the whole process of sales development, production process and quality enhancement.
- The simulated company is managed over the course of several years. This gives participants the opportunity to see and experience long term results and the consequences of previously made decisions and their various impacts on the simulated company's future activities and decisions
- Teams and roles
- Teams of five to seven persons usually take part in MERKIS. Each team manages its own simulated company as the teams compete against the other.
- In the course of MERKIS, every participant is assigned a position in the company and has to play his/her role (though everyone is eligible for promotion and may be promoted in the course of the game).
- The participants develop and implement the following elements of the company’s strategy
- Company’s values, mission and vision.
- Long-term objectives of the company and plans on how to attain them.
- Sales and product strategies.
- Production, new technologies implementation and logistics optimization strategies.
- Human resources management strategy.
- Financial management strategy: long-term budget and investment plan.
- In the course of the game, the participants make the following key decisions
- To increase production speed.... or improve production quality
- Take loans.... or rely on reinvested earnings.
- Challenge competitors.... or try to cooperate
- Centralization of responsibility.... or distribution of it.
- Purchase raw materials.... or invest in new technologies.
- Be a leader.... or be a team member.
- Focus on near-term profit.... or longer-term profit.
- Pay more attention to strategy....or tactics
- MERKIS structure
- The game provides an effective combination of practical and planning activities with theoretical material necessary to acquire knowledge and master the proper skills.
- MERKIS is a powerful tool owing to the fact that participants do not have to wait till the end of training to be able to assess the skills mastered in real-life situations – they can use those skills during the “second year” of the simulation game, thus implementing and reinforcing rapidly learned and effective lessons.
- The participants, passing from the “first” year of the simulation to the subsequent ones, thus have a unique opportunity to analyze their strategies and the results of the strategies, as revealed in the course of the game, and, if necessary, to change them.
